There’s nothing quite as frustrating as stepping into the shower and getting little more than a trickle. Weak water pressure can also make everyday chores like washing dishes, filling a pot or running the washing machine take longer than they should.
Fortunately, low water pressure doesn’t always mean you have a major plumbing problem. In many cases, the cause is surprisingly simple and something a confident DIY homeowner can troubleshoot. Here’s how to track down the source of weak water pressure and determine what you can fix yourself.
First, Figure Out How Widespread the Problem Is
Before reaching for your toolbox, check several faucets and fixtures around your home. Turn on both hot and cold water at kitchen and bathroom faucets and test your showerheads. If only one fixture has weak pressure, the problem is probably located at that fixture. A clogged aerator or showerhead is a common culprit.
If several fixtures have low pressure, however, you might be dealing with a larger issue involving a valve, pressure regulator, water heater, plumbing system or municipal water supply.
This quick test can save you a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.
1. Clean Clogged Faucet Aerators
If one faucet has weak water pressure, start with the aerator.
The aerator is the small screen attached to the end of the faucet. Over time, minerals, sediment and other debris can accumulate inside its tiny openings and restrict water flow.
To clean it:
- Unscrew the aerator from the faucet. If it's tight, carefully use an adjustable wrench with a cloth around the aerator to protect the finish.
- Take the aerator apart, keeping track of how the pieces fit together.
- Rinse away loose debris.
- Soak mineral-covered components in white vinegar for about 30–60 minutes.
- Gently scrub stubborn deposits with a small brush.
- Rinse everything thoroughly, reassemble the aerator and reinstall it.
Turn the faucet back on and check the flow. Sometimes this five-minute fix is all it takes.
2. Clean Your Showerhead
A showerhead can develop the same mineral buildup as a faucet aerator.
Remove the showerhead if possible and inspect the spray holes. Soaking the showerhead in white vinegar can help dissolve mineral deposits. After soaking, use a small brush to loosen remaining buildup, rinse the showerhead thoroughly and reinstall it.
Be careful not to damage rubber seals or decorative finishes and always follow the manufacturer's cleaning recommendations.
If the shower pressure improves afterward, you’ve found your problem.
3. Check Your Shut-Off Valves
Low pressure throughout the house can sometimes be caused by a valve that isn't completely open.
Locate your home's main water shut-off valve and check its position. If you've recently had plumbing repairs or other work performed, someone might have closed the valve and failed to reopen it completely.
You can also check the individual shut-off valves beneath sinks and behind toilets when the problem affects a particular fixture.
Don't force a valve that is stuck, heavily corroded or difficult to move. An older valve can break or begin leaking when disturbed, turning a minor pressure problem into a much bigger repair.
4. Check Whether Hot and Cold Water Are Both Affected
Here's another useful troubleshooting trick: Compare your hot and cold water pressure.
If both are weak, the issue might involve your home's main water supply.
If the cold water pressure seems normal but the hot water pressure is weak throughout the house, the problem might be associated with the water heater or hot-water plumbing.
5. Look for Plumbing Leaks
A leak can reduce the amount of water reaching your fixtures, and small leaks aren't always immediately obvious.
Check accessible plumbing for signs such as:
- Dripping or visible water
- Damp cabinets or walls
- Water stains
- Corrosion around fittings
- Unexplained puddles
- Unusually high water bills
If you suspect a hidden leak, don't ignore it. Even if water pressure seems like the bigger annoyance, an undetected leak can cause expensive water damage.
6. Consider the Water Pressure Regulator
Some homes have a pressure-reducing valve, also called a water pressure regulator, installed where the main water line enters the home. Its job is to reduce incoming municipal water pressure to a safe level for your plumbing.
If the regulator fails or falls out of adjustment, you might notice unusually weak -- or sometimes unusually strong -- water pressure throughout the house.
A water pressure gauge attached to an appropriate outdoor hose connection can help you investigate your home's pressure. However, don't simply crank up a regulator in an attempt to get a stronger shower. Excessive pressure can damage fixtures, valves, supply lines and appliances.
A Little Maintenance Goes a Long Way
Weak water pressure can feel like a major plumbing headache, but the solution might be as simple as cleaning a clogged aerator or fully opening a valve.
